Fridtjof Mehlum is one of the initiators of the BRC consortium in 2013 on behalf of the Natural History Museum, University of Oslo. He is the former research director of the museum and is now a senior researcher (emeritus). Mehlum holds a Dr. philos. degree in ecology from the University of Oslo. He has been involved in a broad range of biological research, and his specialty is ornithology. His publication list includes 150 scientific and popular science papers. Since the start of BRC, Mehlum has been a member of the BRC board and the head of the BRC Scientific Committee.

Professor emeritus in mammalogy at Natural History Museum, University of Oslo. Research primarily related to Arctic marine mammals, in particular polar bears, walrus and bowhead whales. The studies are management oriented and related to movement patterns and distribution of populations. Many studies are related to levels of pollution in the marine environment. The research is also related to the systematics of terrestrial carnivores. In later years, the research has an increased focus on genetic analyses of ancient and contemporary tissue samples from Arctic mammals in order to assess population structure. Since 2014, scientific leader of several projects on the effects of mining operations on red listed mammals in Paragominas, Brazil. Has published about 220 research articles in international scientific journals.
